Empathy isn’t about being soft. It’s about understanding people clearly and responding with intention. This session breaks down what empathy is, why it matters, and how to use it without compromising professionalism.

Empathy in the Workplace:

Practicing Empathy While Maintaining Professional Boundaries

Earlier this year, the National Association of State Treasurers (NAST) invited me to design and deliver a customized interpersonal‑skills webinar series for its membership. I created these sessions specifically for leaders who operate in high‑visibility, politically sensitive environments where composure, clarity, and credibility are essential. NAST has generously authorized me to share these trainings with my broader community, and I'm pleased to offer this session to you as a free resource.

About This Session

This webinar explores one of the most misunderstood leadership skills: Empathy. In high‑pressure roles, empathy is not about being overly accommodating or emotionally porous. It's about understanding people clearly, connecting intentionally, and applying emotional intelligence in ways that strengthen trust without compromising professionalism. This session breaks down what empathy truly is (and what it isn't), why it matters in politically sensitive environments, and how leaders can use it as a strategic tool for influence, collaboration, and credibility.

What You'll Learn

In this 45‑minute session, you'll learn how to:

  • Distinguish empathy from common misconceptions, clarifying what it is and what it is not.
  • Explain why empathy is critical to effective leadership, especially in high‑pressure or politically charged settings.
  • Identify the three types of empathy and explain how each applies in professional contexts.
  • Use empathy strategically to build trust, foster collaboration, and improve decision‑making across teams and leadership levels.

You'll also gain practical tools to apply empathy with clarity and boundaries - a skill that protects your credibility while strengthening your ability to connect and influence.

Why Empathy Matters in High‑Pressure Roles

As a leader, you often have to navigate complex relationships, competing priorities, and intense scrutiny. Empathy helps you:

  • Understand what people need in order to move forward.
  • Communicate with clarity instead of assumptions.
  • Build trust quickly and maintain it over time.
  • Reduce friction and prevent unnecessary conflict.
  • Make decisions with a fuller understanding of impact.
Who This Training Was Designed For

This webinar was created for State Treasurers, senior staffers, and public‑sector leaders who regularly operate in high‑stakes, high‑visibility environments. While the examples were tailored to NAST's membership, the tools and insights apply to any leader who must stay composed, credible, and effective under pressure.
