Go behind the scenes of the brain to learn why emotions surface so fast under pressure, and how to catch the early warning signs before they cost you credibility.

Emotional Regulation & Professional Composure in High‑Pressure Roles

Part 1: The Brain, Habits, and Emotional Foundations

A NAST‑Commissioned Training Now Available as a Free Resource

Leaders in high‑visibility roles know the pressure that comes with scrutiny, public hearings, crisis response, and politically sensitive environments. Earlier this year, the National Association of State Treasurers (NAST) invited me to design and deliver a customized interpersonal‑skills webinar series for its membership, a group of professionals who regularly operate in fast‑moving, high‑stakes settings where composure is non‑negotiable. NAST has generously authorized me to make these sessions available to my broader community, and I'm pleased to share Part 1 of the series here as a free resource.

What This Session Covers

Part 1, The Brain, Habits, and Emotional Foundations, pulls back the curtain on what's happening internally when pressure rises. Composure isn't just a personality trait. It's a trainable skill rooted in how the brain predicts outcomes, interprets threats, and triggers emotional responses. This session helps leaders understand the mechanics behind those reactions so they can stay steady, credible, and influential when the spotlight is bright.

You'll learn:

  1. 1
How automatic brain processes shape confidence and composure in public settings
  2. 2
Why emotions surface so quickly under pressure, and how unconscious habits drive predictable reactions
  3. 3
How to identify personal emotional triggers that can derail focus during hearings, crises, or scrutiny
  4. 4
What the habit loop is and how it governs your stress responses
  5. 5
How to spot early signs of emotional leakage or misinterpretation that can undermine credibility in politically sensitive environments

This is foundational work - the internal awareness leaders must build before they can regulate emotions effectively in the moment. Part 1 sets the stage for Part 2, where we move into applied self‑regulation techniques and a structured framework for responding with clarity under pressure.

Who This Training Was Designed For

This session was originally created for State Treasurers, senior staffers, and public‑sector leaders who routinely navigate high‑stakes conversations, public scrutiny, and politically charged environments. While the examples and context were tailored for NAST's membership, the tools and insights apply to any leader who must remain composed, credible, and influential when the stakes are high.

Why It Matters

When leaders understand what's happening behind the scenes, in the brain, in their habits, and in their emotional patterns, they gain the ability to anticipate reactions instead of being surprised by them. That awareness is the first step toward building the kind of professional composure that strengthens trust, steadies decision‑making, and protects credibility.

If you operate in a role where pressure is constant and visibility is high, this session will give you a clearer understanding of your internal landscape and a stronger foundation for emotional regulation.
