Questions To Ask When You’re Feeling Discontent With How Life Is Playing Out For You

When my clients are discontent and complaining about how life is playing out for them, there are five questions I typically ask to get them thinking about the things they need to be thinking about to be much more thoughtful and intentional with how they choose to move forward. I share those questions in this short video.
Q1  Each morning you are getting up and choosing how to spend your time and energy – both of which are limited resources, so what are you choosing to spend it on? What kind of things do you spend your time and energy thinking about, talking about, and doing each day?

Q2  When you engage in these things, what is it that you’re hoping to accomplish? Why in the first place are you choosing to think about, talk about, and do these things? What are you hoping to accomplish? What are the outcomes you seek?

This leads us very naturally into question three.

Q3  Are those the outcomes you're getting? What are you really accomplishing when you choose to spend your time and energy thinking about, talking about, and doing these things?

Q4  What is within your full control when you choose to spend your time and energy in this way...and what isn't? If you engage in thoughts and activities in which you have no control over the outcomes, then perhaps you are the one responsible for creating the outcomes you say you don't want? If that is true, then it's time to entertain question #5.

Q5  What would be a much better way to spend your time and energy so that you can get closer to the outcomes you say you want? How would you think and behave each day?

An important part of this is staying focused on what you can control.
You can certainly choose to spend your time and energy on the things you don't control...but, when you end up with the outcomes you say you don't want, the only person to blame is you because you wasted your precious resources of time and energy in unproductive ways.

Or…you can choose to spend your time and energy engaged in activities in which you have far more control and are far more likely to move you closer to the outcomes you say you want.

The choice is yours, and it all begins with owning your decision making.
